The #freedomchains pavilion was recently awarded Third Place in the Art – Bespoke category of the 2022 edition of the annual [d]arc Awards. Designed by DP Architects, the pavilion was conceived in collaboration with its specialist companies DP Design and DP Lighting.
Thematically, #freedomchains is an expression of the relationship between love and freedom. It made use of bicycle chains as the central theme, creatively interpreting the dual functions of chains as both an antonym that restricts freedom and an integral conduit that enables freedom through mobility and free movement in bicycles. As a key mode of transport within the migrant workers’ community, the pavilion also recasts the humble bicycle chain into an extraordinary visual motif of freedom; encouraging exploration and examination of our love for the built environment and one of the key communities behind it. In line with its message, DP Lighting created a luminous sky for the pavilion by using backlit membrane with carefully placed (in relation to hidden chain anchors) LED strip devices creating the even false sky glow.
