DP Architects sweeps Three Melbourne Design Awards 2018 |

DP Architects’ Novotel and Mercure Singapore on Stevens clinched a gold award and Project Bus-Stop and Rhizome House each clinched a silver award. The Melbourne Design Awards recognises and celebrates the creativity, diversity and excellence of those who are leading the way.
Under the category of Architecture – Mixed Use – Constructed, Novotel and Mercure Singapore on Stevens is a development that comprises a hotel, commercial facilities and a club house. Designed in the shape of the Chinese character 人 which means people, the development honours without reservation the guests, diners, builders, workers and all persons whom the hotel depend upon for its existence. The 人 form carves the triangular site into three distinctive public spaces: a grand arrival space to the south, an infinity pool with a view of the lawn to the east and a stretch of lush landscape flanking hotel facilities to the west.

Project Bus-Stop and Rhizome House received recognition under the Urban Design and Pop-Ups, Display, Exhibit & Set Design categories, respectively. A concept shelter in Jurong East Central, Project Bus Stop is a test-bed for the reinvention of bus stops as meaningful social nodes. It seeks to create the various social environments to make waiting for a bus a joyful experience worth waiting for.

Created for the Amsterdam Light Festival, the Rhizome House design responds to the festival’s theme of biomimicry, taking geometrical inspiration from nature’s rhizome structures and their root-like, self-supporting and interconnected nature. The parametrically designed rhizomes, or fungus roots, occupy 4 Dutch canal houses on the banks of the Amstel River, changing colours as if they were alive. Their scale allows and encourages participants to enter the network and define how to use, occupy, or dismiss this new spatial typology.
