Alexandra Central, the upscale hotel and retail mixed development located at the corner of Jalan Bukit Merah and Alexandra Road in Singapore, was featured in Issue 089 (Dec 2015 / Jan 2016 issue) of d+a, for its dynamic, animated façade and cantilevered glass box that gives Park Hotel Alexandra its signature form.
It was highlighted for its design intent to inject life and vibrancy into the suburban Alexandra area, while blending in with its environment respectfully. Comprising the 19-storey Park Hotel Alexandra and a mall, key design features include a monumental cylindrical glass volume on the first storey that allows the public to view human activity on the retail levels, and horizontal lines expressing movement and dynamism throughout the podium façade. The hotel tower is also oriented to capitalise on views towards the green Southern Ridges in the southwest and the city in the northeast.
d+a also noted that in contrast to the splayed linear edges of the hotel tower and the Bukit Merah façade, a sinous curved façade with an aluminium perforated screen sweeps along the entire frontage facing Alexandra Road to further accentuate liveliness and a sense of movement for the buidling. DP Architects director Wu Tzu Chiang also explained that the building’s earthy palette of colours and material was deliberately selected to blend in with the huge roadside trees and foliage, fitting in with his belief that architecture should create spaces that can feel like ‘second homes’ to the user.
