Cubes Magazine Features Angelene Chan

DP Architects CEO Angelene Chan penned her thoughts on the issue of gender in the architecture industry in the June-July 2016 issue of Cubes magazine.

She wrote about architecture being the communication of an idea to better the human experience through buildings, which are physical records of this creative process where the strongest ideas win. The architect needs to listen and ask the right questions to know the needs of the client, users, context, climate, constraints, and challenges. Confidence and the ability to make good decisions and be firm in discussions are essential to success. Apart from passion, talent and clarity of vision, variations in architectural design are influenced by design ideology, personal thinking, cultural differences and professional training. What an architect should aspire to do is to create delightful and memorable space that foster a strong sense of community and purpose.

She also paid tribute to what the late famed architect Zaha Hadid said, that one should be considered an architect first, and be judged on the merit and worth of their ideas and hard work. The building and the creative process should take centre stage, not the architect nor his or her gender.
