Never think you are not good enough. Never be afraid to ask for help.
– Ms Angelene Chan
This was the advice that CEO of DP Architects, Ms Angelene Chan left the women in attendance at the International Women’s Day conference, held on 3rd March at the Shangri-La Hotel. A multi-award architect, including Designer of the Year for the 2018 President’s Design Award and the 2017 Her World Woman of the Year award, Angelene’s keynote was aptly titled ‘Designing a World of Opportunities at Home and Beyond’. Without frills and fancies, Angelene provided insight into female leadership and strategy in the fiercely competitive industry of architecture while raising awareness of fellow accomplished women architects who had long contributed to the transformation of Singapore’s remarkable urban environment. These women role models include Lim Wen Gin, Rita Soh and Cheong Koon Hean, to name a few.
Organised by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI) with Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Ms Grace Fu as guest-of-honour, the annual event celebrated and recognised the contributions of women in our society. More importantly, however, it served to create dialogue among women for women and among the panellists was DP Architects’ director and head of designINTELLIGENCE department, Ms Chan Hui Min. Fielding questions related to the woman’s value and corporate cultures, Hui Min observed that evolving social norms, cultural conventions and technological advantages has resulted in a changing corporate climate that is vastly different from the past. She also shared that in lieu of this, the woman’s strength is her ability to rally people during discussion sessions in order to ensure that everyone is moving in the same direction.
