DP Architects participates in the first ever Public Accessibility Mapping Exercise |

On 10th July 2019, 11 corporate volunteers from DP Architects along with volunteers from Lendlease and Aurecon participated in a Central Business District (CBD) Public Accessibility Mapping Exercise jointly conducted by the Disabled People’s Association, BNP Paribus Securities Services and Singapore Polytechnic.
An initiative funded and supported by BNP Paribas, the mapping exercise is the first of its kind and goes beyond just addressing accessibility in physical infrastructure. Instead, it encourages a holistic approach to accessibility that encompasses sensory perception and how we communicate that information.
Through the exercise and dialogue with persons-with-disabilities (PwD), our DP Architects volunteers gained valuable insight into their real needs. One thing that struck a chord among our volunteers was how code-compliant accessibility in design does not always translate into functionality for the target end-user group. It was a fruitful session and a necessary reminder that as architects and urban planners inclusiveness must be a design priority; not a component or adjustment to be made at the later stages. Only then, can we continue to design to improve lives and enrich the human experience.
The Disabled People’s Association will compile all the findings collected and formulate a report which will be presented to government, agencies, CBD building owners and other stakeholders in order to work together towards making Singapore’s business hub more accessible.
The event was also attended by Guest-of-Honour, Minister Desmond Lee, Minister for Social and Family Development & Second Minister for National Development who also participated in the mapping exercise.
