DP Architects wins scheme for architecture and design festival in Spain

DP Architects is the winner, out of 52 international entries, of the installation design competition for Concéntrico, the architecture and design festival of Logroño, the capital of La Rioja province in Spain. The urban installation will be constructed by DP Architects and displayed at Logroño’s Historic Center for the duration of the festival, from 27 April through 1 May 2017.

The competition calls for an intervention within the historic Plaza del Revellin in Logroño, Spain. DP Architects’ entry, titled Cada cuba huele al vino que tiene (Every cask smells of the wine it contains), is dedicated to Rioja wine. There are nine structures, each designed as a deconstructed wine barrel (to be assembled with the poplar plywood, a competition requirement) and representing a town within the Rioja region. The interior is stained with the wine of their area, their shades vary and create an interesting diversity to be discovered while traversing the installation. The staining also imbues the wood with the wine’s scent and creates a heady environment that transforms into a fully immersive sensory space. On the ground, a circular light glows wine red and casts a ceremonial light about the space. This light represents the earth from which the grapes grew. Above, the sky framed in a hooped oculus, a reminder of the climate and weather which make the land so fruitful. The installation takes on a devotional aspect, each structure a temple to wine, the land and the communities that made it possible. At night, the whole of Revellín Plaza takes on a reverential glow.

The jury praised the design for “the dynamic and suggestive nature of the architecture it incorporates. It is resolved using pieces that, through the exercise of repetition on different scales, inhabit and filter the space, generating new paths and provoking a unique relationship between the pedestrian and the square, making them a participant.”
