DP Design’s William Kwan-Terry and Kenny Chia will ‘Switch Off, Turn Up’ at i Light Marina Bay this March 2018.

DP Design is proud to be a part of Asia’s leading sustainable light art festival, i Light Marina Bay 2018. Designed in line with the festival’s energy-saving campaign, ‘Switch Off, Turn up’, DP Design’s creation aims to bring greater awareness towards sustainability issues and ignite interest so as to motivate change. The gigantic pendulum-like structure, aptly named Cradle2Cradle, is the brainchild of two DP Design’s interior designers, William Kwan-Terry and Kenny Chia.

Cradle2Cradle is the duo’s creative exploration of the relationship between art, science and technology for a sustainable future. Inspired by ‘Newton’s Cradle’, the interactive kinetic light installation integrates Piezoelectric technology with light, structure, art and science. Cradle2Cradle will be the first of its kind in Singapore. Made of steel frame and acrylic spheres, and wired up with Piezoelectric technology, it will demonstrate the conservation of momentum and energy using a series of swinging spheres, which upon impact and energy transference, results in a mesmerising display of light and logic.

Experts in the field of interior design, creating aesthetically pleasing yet functional spaces is something William and Kenny are familiar with. Diving into the world of art installation design, the two quickly realised that it is a different ballgame altogether. “With Cradle2Cradle, we not only entered unchartered territory on several fronts. The experimental nature of this project itself was also a great challenge,” Kenny explains. “Fortunately, we were able to tap on DP group’s broad spectrum of specialists, specifically consulting with the specialist arms in lighting and engineering, DP Lighting (DPL) and DP Engineers (DPE), respectively. From this crucible, Cradle2Cradle was born.”

When asked what led them to participate in one of Singapore’s most popular light art festivals, Kenny said simply: “The theme for i Light Marina Bay 2018 struck a chord with what we do and believe in at DP Design.”

To this, William further elaborated: “At DP, we design and deal with projects related to the built environment. Behind our work is a deep concern for this built environment. Hence, sustainability is naturally and increasingly a key component in our design solutions. We have actively achieved this through the marriage of art, science and technology.”

DP Design is thrilled that Cradle2Cradle has been selected to join 21 other light art installations by overseas and local artists, to light things up along the Marina Bay Waterfront. More importantly, it will help to reinforce Marina Bay’s position as a sustainable precinct and serve as reminders to encourage festival goers and the public to adopt sustainable habits in their everyday lives.
