More than a recreational club, HomeTeamNS Khatib is a facility that honours the contributions of the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force. With an architecture that expresses the articulate threading of connections through the punctuation of fortified perimeters, it received an Honourable Mention in the 2021 Architecture MasterPrize for the Architectural Design / Recreational Architecture category.
This frontage view articulates architectural expressions and strategies that respond to the surrounding environment; together, façade modules shield internal spaces from the equatorial heat, and large porous spaces provide natural ventilation and shade. |
In designing the architectural expression for HomeTeam NS Khatib, the architects sought to capture the emotions and stories of servicemen, thus embracing their narratives. The design is guided by principles that reinvigorate the quintessential constructs of home—security, warmth, and trust.
Effected through a display of headgears, a curated journey within the circulatory thoroughfares unveils the story of the servicemen’s past and present aspirations. The immersive design seeks to expand the narrative of defence by galvanising national consciousness, forged by a common, coordinated sense of purpose.
The frontage opens up to the bustle of the passing trains, with the glimpse of each passerby capturing short moments of exhilaration. What is revealed is a spatial tone of intricacy and subtlety, established by the visual definitions of tartan staggering and the slender swelling of columns; elements that invite and intrigue the community, a welcoming vessel forged by opening the doors to a house, so that it can be felt like home.
Now in its 6th year, the Architecture MasterPrize (AMP) is a global architecture award that recognises design excellence. And was created to advance the appreciation and exposure of quality architectural design worldwide.
