Interior Design Interviews DP Design’s Mike Lim

ALL NEWS

IInterior Design’s regular series of ten questions for an architect or interior designer, DP Design director Mike Lim was interviewed on the heels of his talk at the World Architecture Festival, on the need to infuse cultural, social and commercial components into retail design.

Envisioning the mall as a social space of gathering that yields surprises at every turn to impress the consumer experiencing commercial mall fatigue, Mike identifies burgeoning millennial consumer trends that will shape modern day retail spaces in new, social directions.

Mike touches on the popularity of e-commerce and muses that people now shop for a unique experience, since they can find what they need online – signifying that the value of brick and mortar shops, which used to be physical showcases for brands, has been reduced. The physical shopping experience will have to become more emotional, spontaneous, creative and embody the ‘surprise’ element to attract consumers.

Infusing more community-oriented options and anchoring a sense of place within the mall becomes critical as well to encourage repeat customers.
