Project Bus Stop makes waiting fun! |

Project Bus Stop is a Corporate Social Responsibility project initiated by DP Architects (DPA). This began as part of a larger initiative, Project Blind Spot, where DPA was examining ways to redesign commonplace places and re-imagine the way people interact with them. The bus stop emerged as one possible area to test new ideas, and add value to this everyday public realm and space to create various fun and enjoyable experiences for the community.
Through re-imagining the daily commuting experience and how people transit, interact and socialise in this public space, a typical bus stop in the Jurong Lake District has been re-designed to incorporate a green roof, free WiFi, interactive smart boards that provide content and services such as bus arrival timings, bicycle parking, mobile phone charging points, e-books download, and even a swing to improve the otherwise run-of-the mill experience of waiting for the bus. It also showcases artwork by local illustrator Lee Xin Li. The bus stop was officially open to the public on 18 August 2016.
DPA Director Seah Chee Huang, who spearheaded the initiative, said, “We are looking forward to see how commuters use, experience and enjoy this new setting. Hopefully the community will appreciate how bus stops can be an extension of their social environments, as sites of possibilities, fun and enrichment. We also hope this project will encourage more fellow professionals to step forward and collaborate actively in the design of our everyday public spaces, as well as inspire the community to take greater ownership in shaping their own environments.”
Project Bus Stop was implemented through a multi-agency collaboration comprising the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Land Transport Authority, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, National Environment Agency, National Library Board, National Parks Board, and Singapore Land Authority.
Located along Jurong Gateway Road at Jurong East Central and in operation for a year from August 2016, this experimental project allows the trial application of design elements to a real setting and showcases how bus stops can be re-imagined as social spaces. The public are encouraged to share their experiences of using the bus stop at AUDE@ura.gov.sg, and their feedback will provide the agencies with a better understanding of the merits and value of the various features for consideration in the planning and design of bus stops going forward.
