DP Architects is pleased to announce that SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse is the winner under the Sustainable Sports and Recreation Building category in the 12th Architizer A+ Awards. The project, designed in collaboration with DP Engineers, DP Green and DP Sustainable Design, has been recognised for its use of sustainable systems, climate-positive materials and ethical building practices in its design, construction and maintenance.
The design scheme of this recreational hub for National Servicemen and their families prioritises social, mental and environmental health and wellbeing. A full-scope whole life carbon assessment was conducted to quantify the development’s carbon emissions. Sustainable materials such as green concrete and recycled steel were used during construction, reducing embodied carbon emissions per gross floor area by 23%.
Tackling operational carbon, SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse is designed as a highly porous building and integrates a range of active and passive design strategies to achieve a green-forward development. The design leverages natural light and ventilation to reduce its use of artificial lighting and mechanical cooling, thus minimising energy consumption. This is complemented with the use of energy-efficient LED lighting design, such as automatic zonal dimmers, and photovoltaic panels, which offset 10% of the building’s energy consumption. The building also employs a heat recovery system which reuses hot water from chiller plants for heated showers, reducing energy used for electrical heating. All employed in combination, SAFRA Choa Chu Kang Clubhouse is able to generate renewable energy and maximise energy efficiency; enabling it to achieve 42% in energy savings.
The Clubhouse is also a recipient of the Green Mark Platinum – Super Low Energy certification, with sustainability badges for outstanding performance in the areas of Whole Life Carbon and Health and Wellbeing.
