i12 Katong was an opportunity for DP to revisit and reinterpret the site of the former Katong People’s Complex, designed by the firm over 30 years ago. Sited within the historical centre of Katong, the mall is an addition to the vibrant and walkable neighbourhood while respecting its history and multi-ethnic character. Unlike the conventional, inward-facing, modern shopping mall, i12 Katong is porous to connect with its surroundings.
i12 Katong is first experienced from the intersection of two main roads, where the public transportation networks converge and a new entrance lobby is carved to create a public square. Conceived as an outdoor relief space at the road junction, it plays a significant role in the reorganisation of the flow and perception of urban space.
Deriving its scale from the existing three-storey shophouses, the building is stepped back as it rises and the dimensions and scale are tailored to accommodate adjacent buildings. Two identities are expressed on different façades – modernity in the glass curtain wall along East Coast Road, while the façade along Joo Chiat Road reflects the characteristic rhythm of existing shop houses. The abstraction of Peranakan pattern is a recurring theme in this project with elaborate patterns lining the floor finishing and ceilings.
