Sustainability and Community within an Urban Academic Environment
ITE College West
1 Choa Chu Kang Grove, 688236

With the institution’s mantra, ‘Waves of Transformation’, as a formal point of departure, the mega-campus architecture and landscape design are guided by gentle curves. The campus’ curvilinear arrangement is built around a central circulation spine and an events plaza. Aligned with pedagogical principles of a borderless campus, the delineation between public and private were made intentionally amorphous and flexible through keeping the campus open to the public, establishing interaction between the private academic institution and the surrounding community.

An ‘Innovation Walkway’ is the campus’s main circulation spine. This curved, elevated path joins the individual academic blocks and links all students to the central sky plaza. This organisation has a twofold effect: it promotes cross-disciplinary interaction and invites the students to view the interior workings of the gallery style learning environments through glazed façades. The design motif of curves is further developed through undulating walls, which are accentuated with strong horizontal elements designed in elevation.

A recipient of the prestigious BCA Green Mark Platinum Award, ITE College West is not just a facility providing top-quality holistic education for its students, but is also a project that champions sustainability in the built environment through passive design and employing natural shelter and lighting solutions.
