Communicating with Surrounding Nature
Midwood
8 & 10 Hillview Rise, Singapore 667980

Found near Hillview MRT and located next to three of Singapore’s iconic natural landmarks: Little Guilin, Bukit Batok Nature Park and Dairy Farm Nature Park, Midwood residents will be assured of their privacy, helpfully aided by the lush greenery of the idyllic surroundings. It is the first productivity-based land tender award for the PPVC construction process in Singapore.

The driving design philosophy of the project was a habitation that would harmonise with its landscape, both visually and physically. Hence, the nearby natural landmarks, small urban dwellings and sensitive military establishment were taken as design cues for the building façade, which seeks to explore the dichotomy between the private and public. The screens that texture the surface of the building mitigate the need for privacy in relation to the military establishment, while the numerous shifts in the façade create an architectonic movement where screens and materiality interplay.

Ultimately, the residence is rendered as more humane and approachable. The envisioned design theme was likened to a chorus, where shifts in the façade as one progresses upwards would be visually analogous to an undulating dance from the ground to the peak of the building, resounding in an atmosphere of ascension. Midwood thus becomes a melding of the pastoral and luxurious, understated in its elegance, carrying the DP design ethos of creating people-centric projects focused on sustainability and end-user comfort.
